A Dragon Boat Festival is approved for Banff National Park

Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada – The first-ever Dragon Boat Festival for Banff National Park has been approved to glide the mystical waters of Lake Minnewanka on August 23 & 24, 2008. The non-motorized long-boat canoe race and festival activities are set to showcase National Park environmental stewardship through educational opportunities and an enhanced visitor experience.

A centuries-old race features four boats with teams of up to 20 paddlers in race heats of 200, 500 and 1000 metre stints. According to Andrea Thiessen, Director of Events and Special Projects, “group participants bring their competitive spirits to the lake and are required to build unity in an outdoor environment in order to successfully cross the finish line”. Specialty cup races will include Breast Cancer Survivors and Emergency Medical Services. Cultural festival activities and interpretation will add excitement to the downtown core of Banff, while a “Towards Zero Waste” strategy continues to demonstrate our leadership in low-impact special events.

“Hosting cultural events in Banff National Park provides a non-traditional way of engaging Canadians and educating them about the special and unique place that is located in their backyard” says Julie Canning, President and CEO of Banff Lake Louise Tourism. “We look forward to working collaboratively with Parks Canada, the Town of Banff, and the Alberta Dragon Boat Race Foundation on an integrated approach to running this exciting new event”.

Watch for summer adventure packages for hotels, activities and restaurants listed prior to the event on the homepage of www.banfflakelouise.com.

A Heritage Moment
Lake Minnewanka, originally called Devil’s Lake, was renamed in 1888 because it was believed the name was too ominous for visitors. Its new name is translated from the Stoney word ‘Minnee-wah-kah’, which means the “Lake of the Water Spirit”. In the late 1800’s, the lake was home to Minnewanka Landing, a popular resort community. When the lake was dammed, the reservoir submerged Minnewanka Landing and it has now become a popular location for cold water diving.

Town of Banff Comes Alive with Pedal Power

Banff National Park, Alberta – A first for Banff National Park and sanctioned by the Alberta Bicycling Association (ABA), Banff will host a one km criterium road race on June 21, 2008. Cyclists are expected to race wheel to wheel through the streets of Banff during Banff National Park’s Bike Fest. The one-hour criterium race is a high-adrenaline test of wits, willpower and tactics that is expected to draw thousands of spectators.

“We are looking forward to working with the Town of Banff to put on the finest bike racing event in the Canadian Rockies,” said Julie Canning, president and CEO of Banff Lake Louise Tourism. Permit applications to Parks Canada have also been made to stage individual time trials and a scenic road race that weekend.

“We are just thrilled about this new event for Banff. Residents and visitors have enjoyed cycling in and around our community for as long as I can remember, but this will be the first time we will have a high calibre road racing event right in our community,” says Town of Banff Mayor John Stutz.

“You don’t have to know anything about bike racing to know that they’ll be handling those corners at high speeds,” says ABA’s Scott Kelly. “What the Banff race has that no other race has is the awesome scenery and spectacular location. It’s unlike anywhere in North America and it epitomizes what bike racing in Alberta should be about,” says Kelly.

The popularity of road biking in North America has exploded in the last 10 years following seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong’s success and his battle with cancer. Licensed bike racers compete for points in various categories throughout the summer, from professional teams with a convoy of repair techs and equipment vans, to weekend warriors with families in tow.

International Ice Carving Competition becomes a Qualifying Event

Banff National Park, Alberta (December 27, 2007) – The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and Banff Lake Louise Tourism team up to transform Lake Louise into a magical wonderland of ice but this time its sights are set much higher. The International Ice Sculpture Competition part of the festival events set against the backdrop of the Victoria Glacier has become a qualifying event for the 2010 Olympiad in Vancouver.

Sanctioned by the National Ice Carving Association, renowned international accredited teams are given 15 blocks of ice and 34 hours of carving time over a 2½ day event to create masterpieces. Beginning in 2009, the bar has been set higher as carvers will accumulate points needed to qualify for the International Ice Competition in Whistler, BC, in 2010. The Lake Louise competition is the only qualifying event in Western Canada. “This recognition is a great step forward for the festival. Ice Magic has been growing exponentially and several new events have been added this year. We look forward to showcasing Lake Louise to the world through this special acknowledgment” says Andrea Thiessen, Director of Events and Special Projects for Banff Lake Louise Tourism.

This year’s theme “ Celebrating Snow Queen, Ice Fairies and The Enchanted Forest” will bring ice carving teams from as far away as Nigeria, as well as the Banff Centre’s Canadian composer Patrick Cardy’s adapted score of The Snow Queen for string quartet. Also new this year is Baker Creek Chalet’s Ice Playground, Samson Mall’s Little Chippers Children’s Carving and Lake Louise Inn’s One Hour, One Carver, One Block. Watch in on the Canmore Eagles Hockey Game at the Recreation Centre or a dog-sledding demonstration as the entire community of Lake Louise celebrates the Ice Magic Festival weekend. For a full schedule, visit www.banfflakelouise.com/icemagic.

Tucked deep within the boundaries of Banff National Park, the destination of Lake Louise holds unrivalled experiences to make your visit a moment to cherish. From world-class festivals and breathtaking scenery to cozy restaurants and charming hotels, Lake Louise is a destination of choice for families, couples and nature lovers.

30 cm has fallen with More Predicted to Arrive

Banff National Park, Alberta (December 4, 2007) – The weather outside is delightful…..let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! This song created in 1945 by Sammy Cahn must have been on a visit to Banff National Park in Canada. The song intended to create reflections of warmth and security associated with the holiday season is just the atmosphere here in the National Park as the snow continues to fall heavily. Last night and predicted for tomorrow, Banff and Lake Louise town sites have received over 30 cm (12 inches) of the champagne powder and the weather experts say more is on its way.

When the snow flies in Banff National Park, the real fun begins. Cross-country skiers skim across the trails with a warm rosy glow in their cheeks, laughing children run back to the top of the tobogganing hill for another thrilling descent, and couples snuggle under the blankets on horse-drawn sleighs. “This is the kind of day that everyone looks forward too!” says Kurt Schroeder, Director of Market Development, Banff Lake Louise Tourism. “Grabbing the skis’, skins or skates are a typical day in the Rockies – some locals even hop on a dog sled for something a little different”.

For a breathtaking experience in Canada’s first national park why not blast through the forested trails pulled by Alaskan huskies, or strap on snowshoes and explore wildlife tracks like the original settlers of the area. Outside the park, helicopters can take you for a rare alpine experience; a “whirly” bird’s-eye view of the peaks. Snowmobile tours allow you to explore the forest on hundreds of trails and during the shuttle ride you’ll learn even more about the park from the on-board guide. Banff and Lake Louise are now open for your ultimate winter adventure.

With Sunshine Village set to open November 8, Lake Louise Ski Resort scheduled for November 9 and Ski Norquay for mid November, visitors will again be able to enjoy a ski experience in a truly rare landscape.

Famous for its breathtaking scenery and outstanding champagne powder, the ski resorts of Banff and Lake Louise are located within the limits of the national park, delivering the pristine experience conscious travellers are looking for. Through the internationally recognized designations of UNESCO World Heritage Site and Canadian National Park, Banff and Lake Louise are protected from over-development.

In support of our unique setting, the three local ski resorts have become important players in assuring healthy sustainability of their mountain terrain. Recent years have seen the ski resorts heavily invest in greener alternatives and decreasing their energy and water consumption. For example, Lake Louise Mountain Resort has dedicated important resources in upgrading its snowmaking system to improve energy efficiency and gone the extra step in protecting wildlife and plants during the construction of their Grizzly Express Gondola. Sunshine Village has also contributed in helping protect the natural environment by integrating stringent water conservation measures, for which the resort has won the prestigious Silver Eagle award in the last few years.

The towns of Banff and Lake Louise are also located within the Park, and offer mindful skiers and snowboarders a variety of ecologically sound options. From recyclable waste at events to local restaurants using organic ingredients, visitors can participate in reducing their ecological footprint while skiing and visiting the protected environment of the National Park.

Environmental Action Plan Brings Green to Banff Events

Banff National Park, Alberta – spring in Banff brings a new environmental action plan to be launched during the popular Heat-Up the Rockies event March 31, 2007. The aim of Towards Zero Waste Events in Banff is to maximize the number of resources that can be recovered for reuse, recycling and composting at major events in Banff National Park.

The partnership between Banff Special Events, the Town of Banff and the Bow Valley Waste Management Commission will encourage Heat-Up the Rockies event sponsors, vendors and partners to commit to the Towards Zero Waste Events plan by following best practice guidelines that will virtually eliminate generating garbage that must be land filled. Gourmet Grill food vendors, including the Bison Mountain Bistro, the Elk & Oarsman, Tommy’s, Saltlik and the Wild Flour Bakery will show their support of the Towards Zero Waste movement by eliminating the use of polystyrene or plastic plates, cups, and cutlery and using paper based and compostable food-ware at the event.

Town of Banff environmental services coordinator Chad Townsend stated “this is a great first step for Banff events to go green; I hope that we can use Heat-Up the Rockies as a model to encourage other events and businesses in Banff to rethink the waste they produce in our National Park.”

The Heat-Up the Rockies street party will take place on Banff’s Bear Street and in the Bear Street parking lot. Festivities include a three-on-three street hockey tournament, climbing wall, street performers, live music and a selection of Banff’s best at the Gourmet Grill area. Resource recovery stations (special blue bins) will be placed at various locations and teams of Zero Waste volunteers will be on site to promote awareness and help people understand the new initiative.

Banff National Park, Alberta – Natural mineral water is now flowing back into Banff’s Upper Hot Springs after a brief hiatus over winter. It is unknown for sure why the water periodically stops running, but there are certainly some interesting theories.

A hot spring begins when precipitation seeps through cracks in rocks and travels deep into the earth’s crust. Hard-hat underground tours of the Banff Upper Hot Springs are available for media where you will learn how the water flows through a high-tech heat exchange system, hear the theories as to why the water periodically stops flowing, and learn why its final journey generates huge environmental benefits for the Banff Upper Hot Springs facility.

Hot Springs are a rich part of Banff’s history. With the discovery of the bubbling mineral water in 1882 by workers on the Canadian Pacific Railway, Banff’s tourism industry was born. In 1884 Europeans visited the Upper Hot Springs for the first time, but human use of the mineral water dates back long before with Canada’s Native Peoples who believed the waters sacred – a place to cure illness and maintain health.

Banff National Park, Alberta – Banff Lake Louise Tourism will slalom into the 2007/08 winter season with an edge. Dynamic advertisements will awake Londoners in their search for the ultimate winter experience. The bold campaign highlights the exceptional champagne powder of the Canadian Rockies and calls upon consumers to demand more for their next winter getaway.

“Banff and Lake Louise currently attract more than 90,000 skier visits annually from the UK because the ski experience here offers great value, short lift lines, a long ski season and lively après-ski,” says Kurt Schroeder, Director of Sales and Market Development for Banff Lake Louise Tourism. “With lift capacity of more than 42,000 people per hour throughout the three local ski resorts, skiers have plenty of time to explore the 240 trails offered on the mountains….” The first ever campaign of such scope is a collective marketing effort between the communities of Banff and Lake Louise. The program features advertising in cinemas, London Underground, newspapers, radio, taxi wraps, online contests, and gyms. For consumers who are eager to book, in-market tour operators such as Virgin Holidays, Neilson, Canadian Affair, Frontier Ski, Crystal and Inghams guarantee easy and convenient travel arrangements.

An UNESCO World Heritage Site, Banff National Park has over 7,600 acres of downhill ski terrain located in a protected environment, offering skiers an unobstructed view of the surrounding pristine landscapes. In the heart of the Park, Banff and Lake Louise provide a diverse array of après-ski attractions, special events and cultural entertainment for the urban traveller.

Banff National Park, Alberta – The Mountain Travel Symposium (MTS) will return to Banff National Park, April 11-17, 2010 at The Fairmont Banff Springs. Banff will set the stage to welcome the largest and longest-running gathering of mountain travel professionals in North America. The week-long event features an educational forum with several major presentations from nationally-known speakers who will cut to the heart of the challenges, and opportunities facing the travel and ski industries, individual breakout sessions, and two separate trade shows with one specifically for tour operators and another one for ski club and ski group organizers. A variety of social events and activities are scheduled throughout the week to provide additional networking opportunities. MTS attracts more than 1,000 participants each year and is firmly established as the single most productive business venue for mountain travel suppliers and buyers.

2010 will mark the second time MTS has been to Alberta. The first time MTS came to Banff was in 2004 and the Banff program is still being touted as one of the best ever for the conference. Event organizer, Michael J. Pierson describes the event as a “premier mountain travel marketplace” because it “brings together such a diverse group of travel professionals.”

Roaming the Streets of Banff – Living History Interpreter

Banff National Park, Alberta – Banff Lake Louise Tourism, in partnership with Banff Heritage Tourism, has developed a program to capitalize on Banff’s rich and colourful history. Beginning in mid-July and running through Labour Day, there will be a Living History Interpreter roaming Banff Avenue striking up conversations with visitors and sharing stories about life in Banff National Park.

Performed by Kevin Gedling of Banff, the interpreter will be representing different character forms dressed in full costume of some of Banff's most colourful personalities, including Bill Peyto and a turn-of-the-century Swiss Mountain Guide. The costumes are being provided by Parks Canada.

“We wanted to develop a fun and interactive program where our visitors can learn some interesting facts about our town and surrounding area. The goal of the project is to create another authentic and enjoyable visitor experience. We're always looking for ways to ensure that our guests know they are in a national park and the benefits that provides," explains Grant Canning, Executive Director of Banff Heritage Tourism. “The summer of 2007 is being done on a trial basis, but if the program proves to be successful and is well received by our guests, we would look at making it a permanent part of the overall Banff experience,” adds Canning.

The living history interpreter would also provide an opportunity to answer general questions about Banff, for example, directions, places to visit and things to do while striving to remain in character. The character would provide an excellent opportunity for visitors to stop and pose for photos, learn about other interpretive programs in the area and how they can discover more about the history of the park.

“This program seeks to engage visitors and inform them of the importance of the park’s culture and heritage. At the same time it seeks to cross-promote existing in-resort activities that are attractive to this aspect of our destination” says Stu Back, Manager of In-Resort Services for Banff Lake Louise Tourism.

Banff National Park, Alberta – Banff National Park will be full of flavour in September in celebration of the Culinary Arts Festival as restaurants in Banff showcase some of their best cuisine. The month long festival will conclude with a Chef’s Competition, September 28-30 at Banff’s Mount Norquay Cascade Lodge.

The iron Chef-style competition brings Alberta’s best chefs into a battle to create a superb breakfast, lunch and dinner using Alberta produced ingredients including a wealth of game meats including bison and elk, along with indigenous berries and vegetables. Some of the chef’s confirmed include Banff’s own Sal Polizzi, from the Maple Leaf Grille and Spirits, Andrew Keen of Tribune and Cam Dobranski, of Muse, in Calgary.

Spectators are invited to watch the chefs race to beat the clock and pick up some pointers on whipping up local dishes. The public can also participate in culinary classes in-between competitions that encourage interaction and experimentation. Some of the classes include: Healthy Choices - learn the truth from Alberta nutritionists; Easy and Tasty Snacks on the Go; Environment and Its Impact- with books, movies and events like An Inconvenient Truth, Live Earth, and so many others, climate change and the impact of our actions is center stage. A list of actions individuals can take includes Eat Local and Eat Organic; The 100 Mile Diet - where to find, what questions to ask, how do you know? Wine, Cheese and Entertaining – learn about the best kinds of cheeses (including locally made) and great meats to go with it; Sweets and Treats – learn how to make some amazing new treats including fudge from local artisans; Cooking for the Family; Great Meals with Alberta Meats – learn how to properly cook great alternative proteins like wild boar, elk, bison, ostrich; 30 minute meals; Soups, Stews and Other Comfort Foods – take traditional foods and twist it with regional, organic.

During the entire month many restaurants in Banff will be involved in the Festival by “showcasing food that shows appreciation for local/regional foods as more attention has been given to the impact to the environment and our health,” says event organizer, Glenda Myles. Myles adds that “Banff Special Events Corporation aims to have zero waste and low impact on the environment, so we’ll be using bio degradable cutlery where we can, composting, and hosting a free shuttle service from hotels to the lodge, to encourage people not to drive.”

A Market Place will also take place in Central Park each Sunday from noon to 3:00 PM where products from regional producers can be while being entertained by performers on the Louis Trono Gazebo stage.
